NYX Eye Shadow Base review – Black and White

I think by now almost everyone has heard of and/or used eyeshadow primers/bases. Recently I had a little NYX shopping haul. I bought two of their eyeshadow bases – a black and a white one.

White eyeshadow base

As the name states, the base is white toned. The formula is soft and smooth, which makes applying it easy. It is also creamy enough to blend it out if too much gets on the lid.

Like an eyeshadow base should, it makes eyeshadows pop more. Since it is a white base, the effect is stronger.  After applying eyeshadow over the base, the colour was so much more vivid and bright. With less effort and usage of eyeshadow, I can create a defined look quicker. The base also prevents eyeshadows from creasing or fading away.

Black eyeshadow base

The black eyeshadow base is not as creamy as the white one. The formula is thicker and application needs a bit more effort. In spite of that, it is still easy to cover eyelids with it.

The black eyeshadow base gives the colours a deeper effect. If the eyeshadow is light toned and sparkly, it will give a metallic effect. Matte eyeshadows stay matte but they look even more matte. Basically, in my eyes, it makes eyeshadows look more intense than they would without the black base. I think it is such a brilliant product to use if you are going for a more edgy look.

As you can see from the pictures below, I used multiple colours to show how the tones are changing with different bases. To create the comparisons, I used The Balm NudeTude and Urban Decay Smoky palette.

  • Makes colours more intense
  • Doesn’t let colours crease
  • Colours stay put
  • Easy to use
  • Goes with any type of eyeshadows
  • Brings out the tone with less pigmented eyeshadows

  • I can’t think of any aspect I don’t like about them

    • They do! They also have nude and pearl white base. Pearl white is specifically for metallic eyeshadows. I haven’t tried those but I think they should be pretty good 😊
